GETTING ACTIVE & STAYING ACTIVE Part Two

For the past 2 years, health and activity have been replaced with hibernation.  Staying home has become normalized with the significant increase in people working from home. Whether you're young or old, taking control of your health and the foods you put in your body is detrimental to a long and happy life.

In our next few articles, we're going to explore different activities that help make staying active fun while learning about better food choices for any diet, not just a Paleo Diet that will help you feel better, and live better.

Getting Active Again

With winter ending and the days becoming longer it’s time to start thinking about getting active again. Everyone is different. Some of us like hiking and swimming, and others love running, parkour, and Triathlons.

While you may not want to compete in a Triathlon, with the weather getting warmer, now is the time to start eating better, living better, and benefiting from an active lifestyle.

Getting Out of Your Comfort Zone

If you’re like many, you may have been less active than you should be or you’re making less healthy eating choices. With the winter weather almost behind us, we’re going to talk about the great activities you can do to get active and stay active.

Hiking & Trail Walking

Hiking and trail walking has the lowest startup impact on your body. Appropriate footwear is a must. If you’re new to walking, start with a shorter distance and have a fixed distance mapped out. Setting fixed distance goals helps your subconscious mind by setting challenges for yourself, giving you ‘wins’ that help you advance to bigger goals.

As you develop strength and greater endurance, you’ll be searching for bigger and more scenic challenges and there's nothing like the rush of working towards the goal of climbing a mountain after you set your mind to it.

However, if you plan on starting to conquer the outdoors and blaze new trails for yourself, always let others know where you’re traveling and the appropriate clothing, equipment, and charged phone in case of emergencies.

Running

Running is a great aerobic exercise, however, unlike hiking and trail walking, running has a higher impact on both your body and your footwear from the beginning.

Whether you’re looking to start running for the first time or have run previously, but not for quite a bit of time, although it’s good to set distance goals and challenges, when you start running for the first time, you have to ease into running for speed and distance.

Choosing the Way You Run

There are many types of runs and running exercises you can do from free running to treadmills and laps for distance on a track, having a running training method you prefer helps take the ‘beginners dread’ out of the beginning of your runner's training.

You can check out some of the other types of running exercises here.

If you’ve been inactive for a long time or have had previous injuries, it’s important to have appropriate braces and footwear that help you stay protected as you ease into running.

Surfing

Surfing allows you to enjoy the open expanse of the water while riding waves and experiencing a rush not many have felt before.

However, surfing is a physically demanding activity that requires strength, concentration, and endurance to not only enjoy the activity but give you stamina in case you get into trouble on the water.

Swimming

Besides being a peaceful activity you do in your pool or at the beach, swimming is a great exercise that encompasses the use of the majority of your muscles, and changing the way you swim allows you to work out different muscle groups.

While the barrier for entry to swimming is limited to your ability and strength to swim, other activities like surfing and diving typically require initial strength training to safely pursue them.

Diving

Shallow and deep diving are among the ultimate swimming activities.  Diving allows you to explore new, submerged worlds, and reefs and experience sea creatures in their natural environment but is one of the most physically demanding activities you can do.

Strength, stamina, and endurance are all needed to meet the physical demands of free swimming and sport diving but are extremely rewarding activities.

BIKING & COMPETITIVE CYCLING

Costs Associated with Biking

Another additional cost to consider is if you plan on transporting your bicycle with your car.  When purchasing a bike, if you plan on traveling with your bike, you want to consider either a bike that allows you to collapse it or depending on the type of vehicle you have, you can find mounts and brackets to transport your bike.

The Benefits of Biking

Biking is an activity that can take many forms. From riding your bike for leisure, as an alternative to driving to work, or for endurance and aerobics training to preparing for Triathlons and competitive cycling events, everyone has the potential to benefit from this low-impact activity.

One of the barriers to cycling however is the actual cost of a bicycle, although you can find cheaper bikes at big box stores, finding the perfect bike for you and your comfort is one of the most important things you need to consider, especially if you plan on biking for leisure.

Setting Goals & Staying Determined

If you don’t plan on traveling with your bike, your home makes a great starting point to plan your routes. It’s important to remember that when you start you don’t overdo it.  Sore leg muscles after the first few trips with a bike can be a deterrent for some. While you must pay attention to what your body tells you, keeping to a routine helps you build muscle, stamina, and endurance as you leave miles behind you.
